Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and Harmonics in HVAC Applications

This presentation will cover the basics of design of conventional variable speed drives and the newer matrix design and their differences with regard to harmonics. The advantages and disadvantages of various means of harmonics mitigation will be discussed along with the requirements of IEEE 519-2014.


Jeff Grant, Senior Sales Engineer, LONG Building Environments

Jeff Grant graduated from Penn State University with a degree in Architectural Engineering.  After working at Vanderweil Engineers in Orlando, FL, Jeff moved into Outside Sales with York International.  In 2002, Jeff joined LONG Building Environments, and has been providing contractors, engineers, and owners the products, systems, and methods in HVAC and Electrical equipment to help them meet their needs in the most economical way possible.


Larry Gardner, Product Marketing Manager, Yaskawa America, Inc.

With a Mechanical Engineering degree from Purdue University, Larry Gardner has held a variety of sales and marketing management positions with companies including Eaton, Rockwell Automation, Johnson Controls, and ABB. At Yaskawa since September 2015, he has responsibility for the Z1000 and Z1000U Matrix families of HVAC variable speed drives.
