Questions about Wyoming
Q: What can I do to prevent the affects of the altitude in Wyoming? A: Altitude sickness and sunburn can be problems at high altitude.
Feeling Your Best at High Altitude The elevation at the town of Jackson is 9,603 feet, so consider the altitude when planning your visit. Sunburn and altitude sickness should be considered before arriving. Sunburn can occur faster at high altitude due to more sun exposure at high altitudes where the air is thinner. Altitude sickness is caused by the lack of oxygen in Jackson's thin mountain air. Altitude sickness can affect anyone, regardless of age or physical condition, in altitudes above 6,000 feet. To avoid altitude illness and to feel your best during your visit to the high country, follow these guidelines: • Increase fluid intake: drink two-three times more fluid than usual, water and juices are best. Adequate hydration is key to preventing altitude sickness. • Avoid alcohol and minimize caffeine on the day you arrive and for a day or two after arrival. • Decrease salt intake: salt causes the body to retain fluid which exacerbates altitude illness. • Eat frequent small meals high in carbohydrates, low in fat, and low in protein. • Moderate your physical activity and get plenty of rest. • Medications and oxygen can help you feel much better. Diamox is one prescription drug which prevents the unpleasant symptoms for many people. Consult with your physician for dosage and possible side effects. • Studies have shown that spending one to two nights at a moderate altitude of 5,000 to 6,000 feet decreases symptoms when you go to a higher altitude • The effects of the sun are also stronger at high altitudes, even in cold weather! Be sure to use at least an SPF 15 sunscreen to avoid sunburn.
